A lot more to worry about than the “economic” impact of the tsunami in JAPAN – human deaths, nuclear reactor fallout, the impact to the environment/coast line, etc. etc.

What To Do

In regards to Japan, we would not necessarily recommend altering your long term investment plan based on the relative short term tragedy in Japan. The companies, sectors, and products that will inevitably be used in the aftermath of this tragedy, will, for the most part, come from the United States of America (as always). As is our nature, and in line with what we have been saying for years now, US large cap dividend paying multi-national companies are the best place for investors cash. The situation in Japan is just one more impetus for Clark Bros. to continue to recommend this long term investment strategy to our clients, prospects, and the small fry investor in all of us!

With Friday’s reversal of a follow through day, the markets are likely to go lower. As with all short term analysis based on the “technicals” of the market, there is no sure way to know.

The underlying social changes in the middle east may be just what the doctor ordered for those of you with large cash positions/and/or those investors that have completely missed out on this rally.

What To Do

Focus on entry points for specific targeted securities. Who knows where the market is at year end; or over the next few months; or five years from now. Evaluating the business models of individual companies has been proven (over time) to be highly correlated with adequate investment returns and return on equity. In these highly tumultuous times, stock pickers will prevail over all other players in the market – traders, momentum investors, or market timers. As with every industry in the World, some people are just better at picking stocks than others.

Please don’t try this at home! Clark Bros aggressive growth-speculation portfolio is up an eye-popping 60% for the year. We have yet to trade out of any positions, and with the latest quick bounce back in the market on Friday, we remain cautiously optimistic for the rest of the year. Making us more optimistic about this portfolio is the improving fundamentals and positive news flow we are hearing from these companies. At first glance this portfolio might not seem like a fit for your overall portfolio or investment plan; however, with the markets at multi-year highs, and commodity, energy, and agricultural stocks surging, this high risk portfolio can fit into any investors overall portfolio and risk profile. Make note we do not advocate buying only one or two of the stocks in this portfolio. And, yes, since we are still building positions and “client” portfolios in the stocks in our aggressive growth-speculation portfolio, we do not feel it is fair to existing paying clients to disclose the positions in this portfolio to the masses. Packers win = a. A lot of happy Packers! b. Global warming in green bay. c. Doesn’t matter it’s the super bowl. d. The US stock market will go up this year? e. None of the above - how did I get on this newsletter anyway? I don’t even like sports - especially football. And, I don’t invest - I think the government should do this for me. Please drive to my house in Pittsburgh and show me how to get off your email spam!!

What To Do

There is actually a very high correlation between who wins the Super Bowl and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. But, there is also a very high correlation between the butter production in Bangladesh and the DJIA. So, should we (the small fry investor) actually pay attention to such irrelevant indicators? In short, no, but it is interesting. What might be more prudent and logical, as the Dow (and other indices) approach multiyear highs, is to look at the “market” as a market of businesses, not stocks. How are the underlying business operations of a company? It’s boring, bland, blocking and tackling, not turning over the ball, executing your game plan to perfection….just like the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl!

This time it's different - there will never ever be another market correction!

What To Do

Sorry if you have missed out on this historic market rally. This time it is different. Those who have been in cash or cashed out of this market will never ever be able to buy in at lower prices because the market (this one time only) will only go higher and higher each and every day. Yes, if you haven’t already figured it out we are being sarcastic. We are joking. We are trying to make a point. After any asset or market goes up as much as the US stock market has over the past few years, year, and month (December) you will ALWAYS get a correction. ALWAYS!! It is beyond comment and completely ludicrous that pundits are calling for a market pullback. That is like saying the sun will set! Yes, the sun will set; the sun will rise; markets will go up; markets will go down; and, not YOU nor anyone else will ever accurately and consistently predict the later - so, New Year's resolution for the small investor - STOP TRYING and START BUYING!!!!

Can't we all just get along? In Washington; on Wall Street; upon the fields of friendly strife!

What To Do

Why? I want there to be disagreements; especially, when it comes to the stock market and investing. How else would you ever make any money? You make money, when you are right and others are wrong. At first glance, that looks and sounds pretty harsh. But, it's true. There are literally a gazillion (yep, I have counted them) ways to make money in the financial markets - even if you disagree with me on the direction of the markets; the direction of this country; the direction of our President (or Congress); etc - you get the point! So, what to do? Disagree!!!! IF you don’t think the market is going to continue this rally, THEN here are some investing options. -Natural gas -Precious metals -covered call options -Dividend paying stocks -Dividend paying stocks coupled with covered calls -Utilities -Short the market And oh, hold me accountable, but don’t hold it against me; I simply disagree with you on this one!
