Week In Review: Insider Trading?

Recap
Is it just me? Or are there a lot of “insider trading” cases going around?
Review
In my opinion (personal and professional), the evidence is clear for the SEC to at least investigate the allegations of insider trading at Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway over the Lubrizol acquisition. I’ll bet anyone $65B they never will!
What To Do
Individual investors, as well as many professional investors, rely on regulatory agencies to give some level of protection against fraud, and the dissemination of accurate and correct information. Much of the later has to do with “performance” figures. You know the ones you read in the paper (haha, like anyone does that anymore), on the internet, in the prospectus, and on every advisors web site. Shouldn’t these returns, rubber stamped by industry standards and regulations, then be reflective of an equal comparison to all competitors? Think of baseball and steroids. Hank Aaron never used steroids. Why isn’t there an asterisk besides B.B. record saying, “steroid enhanced returns”? The analogy fits almost too perfectly for investment returns, regulations, and standards in the investment industry. That is, an asterisk next to those advisors, managers, equity owners whose returns (homeruns) were enhanced by the bailouts (steroids). And to think of the irony… .W.B. is an avid baseball fan!
